The C.E.R.T.S., Inc. Adult Action Center provides a smooth transition from school to adulthood for young adults with severe, multiple disabilities by providing stimulating programming which maintains/improves each participant’s skills and quality of life by:
- Keeping and building upon skills taught in the school system
- Providing a safe, nurturing environment
- Creating individualized programming.
The participants in the Adult Action Center have specific needs that include the following:
- Communication. Most of the participants use means other than verbal speech. Some are non-verbal.
- Ambulation. Many participants spend the majority of their time in a wheelchair or specialized equipment.
- Personal care. Most need help with toileting, eating, and other activities of daily living.
- Medical fragility. Most of the participants experience seizures. Many have feeding tubes. All have had several orthopedic surgeries and staff must take special care when moving with them.
This generation of young adults is the first with disabilities this severe to live into their twenties. Because of the strides in medical science, parents and physicians for these young adults have no idea what the future holds. The Adult Action Center program promotes independence and improves the quality of life for our participants. Each participant has plan developed just for them, designed to reinforce basic self-help, communication, functional mobility, recreation, and daily living skills in a fun, safe atmosphere. We currently have 15 participants and anticipate another 5-6 within the next year, reaching capacity.
The Adult Action Center is a MOVE for Adults Model Site and serves as a showcase for the MOVE program and its practices. We are proud of the distinction of being one of only three Model sites for Adults in the world.
