The mission of C.E.R.T.S. Inc. is to enrich the lives of adults with multiple, severe disabilities through a stimulating, person centered day program that increases each participant’s social and functional life skills.
The C.E.R.T.S. Adult Action Center provides a smooth transition from school to adulthood for young adults with severe, multiple disabilities by providing stimulating programming which improves each participant’s skills and quality of life by:
- Keeping and building upon skills gained through their school experience
- Providing a safe, nurturing, exciting environment
- Creating individualized programming based upon participant choice
The Adult Action Center is a MOVE for Adults Model Site and serves as a showcase for the MOVE program. We are proud of the distinction of being one of only three Model Sites in the world (see MOVE for Adults page)
Because all of our participants have many individualized needs, the Adult Action Center offers:
- A large variety of meaningful and fun activities offered daily for each individual to choose from based upon their interest or need. These activities include sports, cooking, art, gardening and music just to name a few.
- A MOVE for Adults trained Occupational Therapist to increase communication and activity skills through assistive technology
- A MOVE for Adults trained Physical Therapist to work with participants to help them learn mobility skills using specialized equipment as well as sitting and toileting skills. (MOVE program)
- An onsite nurse to provide for all medical needs
- Community involvement through daily outings of interest to the individual as well as community service projects.
- A caring, experienced, well-trained staff to assist participants to eat, personal care and all the various activities of the day
This generation of young adults is the first with disabilities this severe to live into their twenties. Because of the strides in medical science, parents and physicians for these young adults have no idea what the future holds. The Adult Action Center program promotes independence and improves the quality of life for our participants. Each participant has a customized plan, designed to reinforce basic self-help, communication, mobility, recreation, and daily living skills in a fun, safe atmosphere. We currently have 26 participants and in July 2011 we moved to a spacious facility at the corner of Elkton Road and Casho Mill Road in the City of Newark, Delaware.
